Adding images to post excerpts can be done in number of ways but the simplest & best way is the concern of most of the wordpress users. Why? Adding images using custom fields is good but not the best.

What if, after writing so many posts to your blog & then after going to add images via custom field separately for each post. Its hectic.

Why not go for a solution that is just 2 clicks away?

Yes, I am talking about the most easiest & reliable way to add thumbnail images to posts excerpts with these benefits:

[1] Using the first image of any post as the thumbnail image of that post wherever you show excerpts (archive page, feed, category page).

[2] No matter, which medium you use for storing the images used in the post, this method will work.

[3] NO need to work with custom fields. Using images that are already in the post.

In simple words, this method will work also for the images that are actually NOT hosted on your wordpress. So, you can also use blogger, photobucket or any other as your image storage medium.

So, just download the Thumbnail for Excerpts plugin for wordpress. Upload it to the wordpress directory & Activate it. All Done, it will do all the job for you. Simple & Easy.

  • Akrati
One of the very best plugins for showing thunmnails wordpress.
  • Not bad but all thumbs are squared, could it be possible to have a specific format ?
  • Yes its possible. Thumbnail For Excerpts Plugin allows you to customize the size, css and alignment. For your convenience I am reposting them here.
Open the PHP file in the plugin directory & edit your preferences

define("TFE_ALIGN","left"); can be left or right

    define("TFE_SIZE","100"); the size of the thumbnail;

define("TFE_LINK","yes"); can be yes or no; if yes, the image will link to the post

define("TFE_CLASS","imgtfe"); the class for the thumbnail images; you can change it or use this class in you CSS file

define("TFE_TITLE","no"); if yes, it will use titles for pictures (when you move mouse over the picture you will see the alt text).
  • Hello,

Thanks for your post. I was searching for a method to show thumbnails when the images are hosted in photobucket and landed down in your post.

I activated this plug-in but it is not working for me. I don't see any thumbnails :( I am using Revolution Church template. Can you please check and get this work for me, Pretty please?
  • I looked at your problem, but I think that plugin should work alright. It automatically takes the first image in every post & uses as its thumbnail. Try out uploading the plugin & activating it again.
  • Revolution Church template uses its own custom fields to add images for thumbnails.
You use photobucket to host your images, its fine but its not the only case I have seen till now.
I too use this plugin & i tried it over photobucket & blogger images in the post, Its working great
  • Man, thanks for your reply. I even tried mailing you thinking you would not bother replying me here Lol Sorry.

  • I just visited your Home-page & all the thumbnails images are there. It working fine.
  • if you want more manual control, I show how to create a this function on your theme, even with photobucket hosted images here: http://blog.perfectedperspectives.com/2010/firs...
